Co. Leitrim.
Parke's Castle is an early 17
th
. Century manor-house
and bawn (enclosed yard) with towers on the angles.
A Castle of the O'Rourkes of Breffni was situated
nearby,
from which the wife of Tighernan O'Rourke
eloped with Diarmuid Mc Murrough.
Although their elopement was to impact on major
events in Irish history,
it started off romantically
enough - at midnight, by boat, across a moonlit
Lough Gill!
There are guided tours of the castle every hour as well as
an audio visual slide show entitled 'Stone by Stone' in four languages.
Recently added to the Castle is an exhibition of models of the Parkes family
dressed in period costume.
A visit to the Castle is much enhanced by a tour of beautiful Lough Gill
on the lovely tour boat
'Rose of Innisfree'
